A view from the French Alps

As most of you know, my wife is a geologist. This past week she’s been on a field trip for work in the freakin’ French Alps. Yeah. A real heartbreaker. When I went on field trips it was to battlefields, or a zoo – with 150 5th graders in tow.  It’s fair!

Anyway, a coworker whom is also on the trip sent this panoramic picture from one of their stops. This spot was particularly geologically awesome because the Moho is exposed. For the non-geologically inclined, the Moho is the boundary that separates oceanic and continental crust from the mantle beneath. So obviously it’s usually found miles and miles beneath the surface. I don’t know why this piece of exposed – I’m sure my wife could explain it. I’m going to speculate some sort of upheaval occurred (duh) but why, and why this place, I don’t know.

Even if you don’t know geology, you can’t deny the sheer amazingness of this view. So, make sure you click on it to view the full size, because wow.
